Presentation was on what finding aids in archives are,how to use them to access our archival materials, and covered overviews of the archival profession and archives in general. Presentation went pretty well! I Hope it will lead to increased access to our materials. • Intern Ian is only here once a week now,I still have him working on digitizing our VHS tapes from the various collections having them in addition to other various mundane data entry tasks. I have picked up a little bit of the digitization&documentation slack here due to his fewer hours. Will (hopefully!)have all of the VHS digitized before the new year! • There are still a lot of 8mm films and microfilm materials on the backlog I am working to digitize as well. Projected completion for that is still up in the air due to the volume of materials. Hoping to move that back to the front burner with time-permitting. • Editing&compressing newly digitized materials to add onto both the archives'website as well as our digital collection host Omeka. • Covering the research desk as needed as Sonia trains with Ellen and other scheduling windows that need to be filled which need my help. • Collaborating with Brian and Christina using the Creative Edge Studio to produce materials for updating the archival exhibition cases. I have a lot of various exhibitions I've planned out over the past 5 months or so(gathered materials to use,researched/written description tombstones, etc.)and am starting to make this dream a reality!Yay! • As always, various patrons&city employee/department reference/research requests regarding local history/etc.,happy to elaborate further if curious. • Starting groundwork on researching&writing a presentation for Brown Bag Lecture coming up in March on Women Pioneers from the area.Exciting stuff! He never BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT—OCTOBER 2024 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT- OCTOBER 2024 11 knows what the topic is about but he always tells me that he learns at least one new thing every time he comes 13 One-on-ones: My longest standing 1:1 has taken steps to become more tech literate. She went out and bought a laptop! The month of November will be spent helping her learn how to use it and be able to type on her device. I've met a few times with a patron I have helped in the past get on-boarded for his new job. He spent a few months at the library applying for jobs. He got an offer the first week in October and came by to ask for help with navigating the employee portal.Together we figured out how to set up an account, how to find his first pay stub and message his bosses. Other Notes: Due to illness and hurricane Milton a lot of the classes in the beginning of the month had to be cancelled. They have been rescheduled for November. On October 24th,I attended the 2024 SEFLIN Conference held at the Palm Beach County Convention. This year's conference was all about empowering libraries and introducing Al to the library community. I did a presentation. "Empowering Communities through Public Technology Trainers in Libraries" Presentation Description: Public Technology Trainers play a pivotal role in modern libraries by bridging the digital divide and fostering digital literacy. They design and deliver technology workshops, offer one-on-one coaching, and curate relevant digital resources. By staying updated with the latest trends and collaborating with library staff and community partners, these trainers ensure all community members have equal access to digital tools and knowledge. This session explores their responsibilities and the impact they have in empowering individuals to navigate the digital world confidently. I had about 20-25 people attend and I think it was successful. I was able to talk about what I do at the library and for the community of Boynton Beach. I was able to connect with other libraries that are interested in trying to get a public technology trainer. Selling on eBay notes:On October,28th I held a class"Selling on eBay:A Beginners Guide"—I was very excited about this class, I planned to open it to 5 people due to it being hands-on.The plan of the class was to have every attendee come in with their own small object that they would like to post to eBay.We would then all work together to go through the steps on how to successfully post to eBay. I was going to show them how to take pictures for their posting and how to do research to find out if the item it already listed or compare the market. Class quickly filled up,and a wait list began to quickly grow. When the class was full,I started to email out reminders for attendees. I sent out reminder emails: 10/14, 10/23, 10/25 and 10/28.The emails read as follows: BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT-OCTOBER 2024 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT- OCTOBER 2024 12 Hello, You are receiving this e-mail because you are registered for the Selling on eBay:A Beginners Guide class being held at the Boynton Beach City Library on Monday, October 28th,2024 from 5p-6:30p. I wanted to touch base with everyone attending just to remind you about the class. If you are unable to make it,please reach out to me, or remove your name from the registration. There is an extensive waiting list,so I want to make sure everyone registered will be in attendance. If you are registered and do not show for the class, I will have to place a hold on your registration for any following classes in order to give others who were placed on the hold list a chance to attend. Please remember to bring a small item that you would like to sell or use for this demonstration. To save time, I suggest you sign up for an eBay.com account before attending because we won't have enough time to finish everything we need to if we have to go over how to sign up for an account. It is fairly easy and you just follow the directions when you go to ebay.com.Also, to prevent class from going over and making sure we get through the class, everyone should download the Ebay app to their phone, it will make uploading images easier so you don't have to struggle on the laptop. If you would like, you can use your phone exclusively for this class. This class will be held in the Florida Room of the library. When you enter City Hall, just go right up to the library and ask the front desk where the Florida Room is, they will be able to show you. It's in the very back of the library, the room with all the windows that overlooks Seacrest and Ocean Avenue.See you soon!Thank you, Brianna Boynton Beach City Library. The last email I sent at 10a on the actual day of the class. At 4:40p,one patron came in and told me that she was on the waitlist but was wondering if she could sit in the back and watch. I told her that if I had an extra seat due to someone not showing up, I would let them take that spot. By 5pm,four more attendees showed up,all of them were on the waitlist as well. I decided to let them take the seats of the no shows.Around 5:10p,one person who was registered for the class showed up. Despite my multiple emails and the registration form giving directions, no one came with items to practice with during the class. I ended up pivoting and had to teach the class by showing them how to post using my one item. It was a disaster and left me with a very negative feeling. I have decided not to hold that class again because of all the complications. I made signs for different grocery store sections like Bakery, Pharmacy, Deli. We went over what foods belong in their corresponding sections, did a matching activity where my students took photos of different food items and placed them on the correct sign, and we did a scavenger hunt. For the scavenger hunt, I put up plastic food around the bookshelves with their appropriate signs and prices. My students had a list of every food item in the classroom and had to write the section to find it in and the matching price. This lesson helped immerse my students into the grocery store experience in America. Not only did these creative lessons engage them, but they also learned conversation that went along with it. For example, we roleplayed working at a grocery store (starting with me first)and practiced asking for help looking for a specific item and to ask how much something is.A few of my students commented on how great the lesson was, and thanked me for doing this lesson because it is something they do all the time. Keeping the creativeness flowing, I brainstormed and researched ideas for the next lesson:the restaurant experience. I printed out menus for the students to peruse, and we went over each category, like "appetizers" and "desserts."We did various activities to instill this, like first learning what "meals" are, and how there are three in a day and when we typically eat them (breakfast in the morning, i.e.).The best part of the lesson (in my opinion) was creating our own menus. I encouraged the students to come up with a name that represents their BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT-OCTOBER 2024 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT- OCTOBER 2024 17 restaurant and to use foods inspired by their cultures. For example, my Chilean student named his restaurant, "La Ramada" and featured popular Chilean dishes. They were also given colors to make their menus sing. We went over restaurant vocabulary(waiter, plate, etc.)and roleplayed dining out, where I assumed the role of the waitress. My students were excellent at ordering their meals and using manners. It made us all hungry, unfortunately! Ending the lesson, I gave my students their first quiz on restaurant vocabulary, and I was so impressed and amazed with how well they did. There were a few students that aced it 100%, and the majority only missed a few. I'm so encouraged by their intelligence and ambition to learn! The next lesson rolled into clothing. We learned various clothing and accessory items, like "belt" and "shorts." I brought in my winter coat so my students could learn "coat"and the difference between that and "jacket."We also talked about clothing for specific climates, like how we don't need gloves or a scarf for Florida but we do for Ohio (my homeland) in the winter and Canada. We also learned more about each other's country climates this way.To add a little fun into the mix, they did a clothing crossword for homework and said it was fun. We practiced conversation, saying what we are wearing and drilled in the vocabulary by playing games like Pictionary. Along with this lesson was the shopping experience. We roleplayed a shopping scenario, and I was so impressed with how much my students knew already and picked up in class. They BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT-OCTOBER 2024 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT- OCTOBER 2024 18 also learned the vocabulary that went with it, like "elevator"for when they go shopping at the mall and "fitting room/dressing room." Lastly,we ended October with a bang—our Halloween party! The day before, I shared the American customs of Halloween:trick-or-treat, parties, parades, and the like. I made sure to respect my students' backgrounds and upbringings, so I did not promote Halloween in a scary way, or add any ghosts or skeletons (anything resembling death) in terms of the party. For the party, students brought in different foods from their respective cultures, and were able to meet each other since I combined all my students together. We played bingo, had a costume contest and made bracelets. What a fun time for everyone!
