Digitization software is slightly clunky, so some tapes have been digitized in chunks that need to be stitched together. Additionally curating some clips of the more interesting ones to add to the archives’ BrightSign screen. ● Currently in research & drafting process on upcoming Brown Bag Lecture for local women pioneers – fun stuff! Lots to pull from here in the archives. ● Began assessing/appraising materials in Andrews House down the road at request from Boynton Beach & Delray Historical Societies; many materials belonging to Bob Katz who worked on a lot of historic buildings in Boynton. Unfortunately, until a deed of gift can be secured from the legal owners of the materials this is on indefinite hiatus ☹ Continuing work to obtain said papers from the company that bought the estate, however, not holding my breath on this one. ● Put together a short presentation for staff on the archives for our holiday/staff training in December. Will include a tour of facilities! Yay for everyone! ● Some small accruals to collections here and there. Received gifts from (and finally met) Susan Oyer, materials from Boynton Beach Historical Society for their collection, and several other items pending appraisal. ● Ongoing help & coverage for research desk, yay! ● As always, various research & reference request fulfillments with branches of the city and the general public. Most frequent requests relate to historic photographs, businesses, individuals of interest, and homes – keeping my feelers out for materials to add to our collections more aligned with our users’ needs. ● Continuing project on numbering folders/series/subseries in our extant archival collections & representing this information in our finding aids to facilitate better navigation and access of materials. Rough estimate that only about 10% of our collections have this information currently. ● Rehousing photos & other materials in some of our collections that haven’t been stored to current preservation standards (e.g. acid-free folders, stable storage arrangement, etc.). Craft Crop is a new program we are trying out. A craft crop is mostly a group hangout, the idea is people bring whatever craft they are currently working on and they work on it in a group setting. It is an opportunity to socialize with fellow crafters and to learn about new crafts, and techniques. The new Makerspace/Digital Services Librarian is learning all the equipment in the Studio and we are planning to start Orientations again in January. BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – NOVEMBER 2024 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – NOVEMBER 2024 10 Public Technology Training Programs - Brianna Tabil Tech Talk Thursdays: **UPDATED TIME: 10:30a – 11:30a** Join us every Thursday by the couches at the front of the library where we will discuss technology and how to use that tech. This class will be a brief 30–45-minutes chat along with instructions on how to use different technologies. Registration is required and limited to five seats. Others may drop-in but the five registrants will be given seats. This class will be held in the pop-up area of the library. NOVEMBER AGENDA: BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – NOVEMBER 2024 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – NOVEMBER 2024 11 · November 2nd – Home Safety & Security Devices · November 9th – Scan & Sign Documents Using Your Phone · November 16th, 2023 – What is Cloud Storage? · November 30th, 2023 – Exploring YouTube.com Since starting my monthly visits to the Senior Center, I have been getting more and more people in for Tech Talk. It is getting to the point where I might need to open the class up to more than five. I love holding it in the pop-up area, and I would just move some extra chairs over to that section. Extending the class for one hour was the right decision. A lot of attendees like to stay longer and chat about their tech woes. I have seen some real friendships blossom from this class as well. Apparently, a small group of Tech Talk attendees meet up at a local McDonald’s once a week now. 4-Week Computer Literacy Program: 2p-3:30p - 90-minute class · Thursdays: o November 2nd, 2023 o November 9th, 2023 o November 30th, 2023 o December 7th, 2023 The program went off without a hitch. Despite this program being for city employees, I only had one employee register. One week before class started, I opened up the program to the general public. The other four spots filled up quickly. I had a few no shows, but luckily a few walk-ins came in and were able to take advantage of the empty spots. Unfortunately, due to personal health issues, I had to cancel the last two sessions at the end of the month. I have kept in close contact with those that attended and I am trying to put together a make-up session for them. I am going to hold it in the study room next to my office since there will only be three others attending. 23 One-on-One appointments: A few of the 1:1 appointments were from seniors from the Senior Center. A group of them were given cellphones from some sort of government program but they were not shown how to use them. I met with one gentleman twice so far to try and help him understand the smart phone – it is a make and model that I have never heard of (NUU), so I have to do a lot of research to get to the answers for him. BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – NOVEMBER 2024 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – NOVEMBER 2024 12 I have been doing more one on one appointments for help with graphic design and using Canva. I have helped patrons create business cards, sticker labels, logos and social media posts. Other Notes: November 21st, I attended a virtual class on ChatGPT Basics held by the Palm Beach County Library System. I have been attending a few of their tech classes – the Belle Glade branch holds more of those tech virtual classes. Their classes are very basic and less informative that I would like to see. I have been attending these classes to get an idea of what I should be teaching. November 27th, I attended a meeting on with Economic Development about getting small business owners and entrepreneurs into the virtual zone during the day. John and I spoke about using the Whisper Room during school hours and I told him to get in touch with Jeannie and Tiffany to go over policy and what we can do at the library for them. We talked about our city, Boynton Beach, and what we like to do here, where we like to go. We made a list of locations and talked about what we do at each location. For example, we buy books at the bookstore. We dived into proper nouns as well and noted the difference in how we say the name of a place versus no name (I go to Cinemark v. I go to the movie theater). With this lesson, we learned prepositions of place, such as under, above, in, out and so on. I used objects to demonstrate these and created a prepositional game to test assessment. We then combined these two together, drew a map and practiced saying things like, “Walmart is next to the hospital.” Then, we delved into tenses! We went over present tense (simple and continuous) and past tense (simple and continuous). My students were so eager and focused on learning these lessons so that they can converse more in English. Some of my beginner students became overwhelmed with the prospect of all these tenses, so I broke it up and made it easier by drawing charts, modeling sentences and handing out homework and exercises for them to practice and study. It worked! I am very impressed with how quickly my students grab a hold of a new concept. BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – NOVEMBER 2024 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – NOVEMBER 2024 16 We ended November learning and experiencing Thanksgiving with our Thanksgiving party. I’ve been adamant on my students trying traditional Thanksgiving food, and thanks to Pilar and I, we made it happen! We ate and enjoyed each other ’s company, played Bingo and dispersed National Native American Heritage Month bookmarks for bingo prizes and did some crafts, like make corn out of pipe cleaners and beads and color wooden, fall keychains. This will be ongoing since increasing fluency will have a positive impact on automaticity, and reading comprehension. Informal assessment through observation began in week one and is ongoing. In addition to informal observation, formative assessments will continue to be conducted monthly to collect data reflecting student growth. This type of assessment will utilize Running Record and (ERIC) Educational Resources (Reading) assessment (early independent through grade 7) to students at each level represented in the student enrollment chart. Other Parents have informed us that testing at their child’s school will be on going between the months November-December. Also, student’s availability for testing may be affected by the upcoming holidays. On days where students do not receive any homework, enrichment activities will be taking place. These activities are aimed at helping students enhance their skills in reading, communication, and creative writing. Should have a draft ready for review by late Jan or early Feb. – this has been eating up a lot of time, but there’s good stuff to be had! ● Intern Ian finished up digitizing VHS tapes I had him working on – currently reviewing /editing. Mister Ian is now site mapping the archives’ website and identifying leftover dead links/outdated information for me to fix & additionally combing through our archived images/newspapers for notable subjects to highlight. I believe his internship ends in January. ● Began training here & there with Christina Graves on operations at the front desk in the library to potentially cover breaks here and there when the timing lines up and I’m needed; thanks Christina! Have been spending time shadowing people at the desk to familiarize myself. ● Coverage of the research desk as needed for Sonia/Donna/Angela – yay! ● Worked with Brian R. over in the Creative Edge studio assisting making our AWESOME gingerbread house for the library; secured photos & descriptions, and assisted with makin’ them look all pretty in the house’s construction. It came out great! ● Fulfilled various research & reference both internally from the city and externally for patrons/etc.; not an exhaustive list, but, I helped Miriam (last name escapes me) from the Schoolhouse Children’s Museum conduct research and locate materials relating to early 20th century Boynton homes, maps, and aerial photos of different Boynton neighborhoods; helped miss Janet Naughton locate materials on the Boynton Inlet; working on communicating with a librarian in Lake Worth Beach determining collection gaps of the Lake Worth Herald issues we have here and what they are missing; plenty more! ● Processing new donations of materials to the archives ● Continuing discussions with Janis from the Coastal Star – they have offered copies of the full run of their newspapers for the archives! DECEMBER AGENDA: · December 5th – iOS 18 Introduction · December 12th – What is Cloud Storage? · December 19th – What is 5G? · December 26th - *NO CLASS* December is always a tough month for attendance, between the holidays and COVID this year, Tech Talk had to be cancelled a few times. The tech talks that were held went very well and the topics have been received really well. 13 One-on-ones: I met with one woman who was moving up to Orlando and wanted to go over her resume before she moved up there. She is very successful nurse and has been working in the field for over 20 years. She was planning one moving up to Orlando before she has a job lined up and she hasn’t needed to make a resume in over 5 years. We went over her resume and it was extensive with a lot of published medical journal articles. I decided to show her how to make a CV and professional digital profile. She was thrilled to have the help and she even created a canva.com account to work on her digital profile. My regular Canadians are starting to return. I have on regular who started to see me, she created a list of things she wanted to learn while she was up in Canada during the summer. We always have a good time and she is always excited to learn new things about her computer, or how to do certain things. Last session she learned how to make a purchase on Amazon.com and how to organize her emails. Other notes: The new attendance policy has worked WONDERS. One of my chronically no call/no shows has been following the rules and either took her name off the registration in the correct time frame or she came to the class. Having the policy on the registration email helps. I held my first virtual class on Friday, December 27th. I only had two attendees, but I really enjoyed it. I am hoping to plan more virtual classes in the future. I have told patrons who come to my other classes that I will be holding more virtual classes and they all seemed excited about it. This is a massive lesson, and I wanted to make sure my students had a tight understanding of past tense before moving on, especially with my Beginner 1 class that is learning past tense for the first time. I included different activities and conversation practice to help, such as a memory game for irregular verbs. We made flash cards to help with irregular verbs as well and practiced pronunciation, especially for regular verbs where the “ed” can either sound like a “t ” or “d.” Then, we had a review day and then mid-year assessments. These include everything we have learned and gone over so far since September. These assessments are not grade based, to see where each student is—where they have improved since September and if there are any areas that we need to go over again (and this also shows me how I am doing as a teacher!). I was very impressed with the results (please see below for stats). We went over the questions, and will spend more time on prepositions and verb tenses during the second half of the year based off of what was commonly missed. Christmas cheer was officially brought to our holiday party, and my students were able to see and experience Christmas in a different culture. We ate great food, watched the movie Elf, had a hot chocolate bar, a photo area and Secret Santa. Seeing all the thoughtful gifts in Secret Santa was very touching. For the last couple of days in December, I set up a mock shop for my students. They practiced their English to “buy” items they liked using paper money and cards and were able to take items BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – DECEMBER 2024 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – DECEMBER 2024 16 home (my aunt donated a bunch of clothes and accessories). My students loved it and were very grateful. I was very impressed with their listening and interactive skills during this experience. Then, for NYE, we had a combined movie day that gave my students insight into what the holiday looks like to multiple people in America. Have a very happy new year! Current ESOL stats: Enrollment: Beginner 1: 7 students (1 from Ecuador, 1 from Cuba, 1 from Chile, 2 from Colombia, 1 from Haiti, 1 from China) Beginner 2: 7 students (2 from Brazil, 5 from Haiti) Tutoring: 1 student (Ukraine) Lessons Completed: Past Tense: Simple and Continuous Regular and Irregular Verbs Holidays in America (Christmas & NYE) Money/Currency Assessment Results for Each Student: Beginner 1 Zebra: -2 Horse: -6 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – DECEMBER 2024 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – DECEMBER 2024 17 Raccoon: -3 Gazelle: -3 Beaver: -6 Lion: -16 Beginner 2 Coyote: -1 Muskrat: -4 Moose: -5 Puma: -5 Oppusum: -2 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – DECEMBER 2024 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – DECEMBER 2024 18 AmeriCorps K-6th Tutoring Monthly Report - Pilar Regnier and Aldith Scott Americorps Tutoring /Homework Help Tutoring /Homework Help for the month of December was devoted to the following: 1. Book handling/Concepts of print 2. Reading strategies and behaviors 3. Phonic and phonemic awareness 4. Listening Comprehension 5. Reading Compression 6. Writing (Not tested) Holiday Break Due to the long holiday break (Dec.23-Jan.6) and because many parents communicated that they would be traveling with their children for the holidays, testing was not administered. Many parents expressed concern over their children having to continuously test at school leading up to the holiday break. We also noticed that students were incredibly frustrated and distressed during tutoring /homework help hours, and as instructors felt it best that our focus be on the assignments they brought in for help. We plan to resume testing for the month of January, and will continue to assist students in any way we can. Chart 1 Number of Students enrolled by Grade Level As the chart above indicates, we are serving students at the Kindergarten to seventh grade level. We are providing tutoring and homework help and enrichment activities across the curriculum. Practice Packets Tutoring /Homework help remained open during the holiday break. Parents were encouraged to bring their children, and 30 min-1 hour sessions were made available. BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – DECEMBER 2024 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – DECEMBER 2024 19 In addition to assisting students with their homework brought in from school, we have also started giving out practice/study guides. These instructional packets have activities that parents can do with their children and cover topics like, sight word recognition, letters/writing, phonics, and math. Other A majority of the students being served are between grades K-5. Many of these students are starting to come in with homework assignments centered around cursive and paragraph writing. We’ve noticed students struggling with the writing portion of their homework. New, writing focused practice packets were created so that students could keep themselves refreshed on the material during weekends, and while on break. These activities are aimed at helping students enhance their skills in reading, communication, critical thinking, and creative writing. The practice packets include a simple to follow formula for creating main ideas, placement of supporting details, and paragraph writing. BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – DECEMBER 2024 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – DECEMBER 2024 20 We look forward to continuing our tutoring /homework help sessions into the new 2025 school year, and can’t wait for our students to share all the exciting things they did on winter break.
