This has still been soaking up a large amount of my time recently ● Received tons of donations/acquisitions for the archives this month! After barking up the tree for some time, the Coastal Star finally donated to us their full run of issues. Working on securing the Deed of Gift contract with them, as a gofer was delivering materials on short notice ☹ awaiting a response currently! ● Lots of new additions were donated to our Gillian Wimbourne Davis Collection; she ran a dance school in Boynton for almost half a century. Selling her home and had a lot of historic Boynton materials for us to add! ● Cataloging completed with all of the reference department’s city directories being transferred to the archives. Playing a little bit of musical chairs to accommodate appropriate space for them in the archives. They’re in the catalog now though, yay! ● Ongoing work cleaning up our website ● Continued work collaborating with Brian at the Creative Edge Studio to print out nicer quality images from the archives for our display cases & exhibitions. ● Continuing work gathering photographs/videos to showcase the archives on the BrightScreen displays – formatting, watermarking, subtitling, etc. BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2025 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2025 9 ● Helping out with the Research Desk on an as-needed basis still, yay! BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2025 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2025 10 In January, the Creative Edge Studio reopened to the public, and we have started conducting orientations for new users. Patrons who have completed orientation can now schedule one-on-one appointments. I have maintained availability for up to 4 appointments a week, but will be increasing availability to 6 in February with the ultimate goal being 8-10 appointments starting in March. Interest from patrons hoping to volunteer and/or teach classes has been growing, and we have begun planning instructional programs focused on makerspace tech, such as 3D modeling for printing. BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2025 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2025 11 Public Technology Training Programs Tech Talk Thursdays: 10:30a – 11:30a Join us every Thursday by the couches at the front of the library where we will discuss technology and how to use that tech. This class will be a brief 60-minute chat along with instructions on how to use different technologies. Registration is required and limited to five seats. Others may drop-in but the five registrants will be given seats. This class will be held in the pop-up area of the library. JANUARY, 2025 AGENDA: · January 2nd – Managing Device Storage · January 9th – Understanding QR Codes · January 16th – Home Safety Devices · January 23rd – Understanding Google Apps · January 30th – Getting the Most Out of the iPad Tech Talk is really kicking off! Almost every single Tech Talk this month has needed more chairs. I have been focusing on what classes attendees would like to see. They give me suggestions for classes or BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2025 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2025 12 subjects they would like to see at the Tech Talk. The most popular subject in January was Google Apps – so I am probably going to hold that class again. 21 One-on-One Appointments: I had an appointment with one patron that I met through the Senior Center. She was given a phone through some sort of government program for seniors and had no idea how to use it. We were able to sync up the phone with her email accounts. I showed her how to enter in new contacts and how to take pictures. One of my regular Tech Talk attendees scheduled a 1:1. He runs a house flipping company and wanted help navigating the business world of it. I introduced him to Gale Demographics. I also showed him how he could AI to help him write up a Scope of Work and other real estate forms. Other Notes: New Year, new visits to the Senior Center. I went to the Senior Center, Wednesday, January 8th, 2025. I had 8 people come in. Not everyone stays for the whole session, since there are other programs going on. I bring two or three topics to talk about, but it usually ends up with them leading the class. They all come in with their devices that they need help with and most of the time one person has a question and it ends up being everyone’s question. Friday, January 10th, I attended a webinar called “Managing Your Own Emotions During Conflict” put on by Ryan Dowd of The Homeless Library. The class went over the different types of conflicts you can face while working in a library (or any public facing position) and the appropriate ways to respond and how to try and de-escalate without letting your own biases and emotions get in the way. On Thursday, January 23rd, I attended the PBCLA Winter Quarterly Meeting at the Cox Science Center & Aquarium. I did a presentation on “AI Generated Content” where I went over how AI generates its content and then how to create your own content using AI. I also showed them how to spot potential AI generated images, videos and text. On Wednesday, January 29th, I attended a webinar put on my FLA called “AI: The Future of Library Services is Here Webinar with Heidi Cramer.” The class was very interesting and showed different ways to use AI effectively in the library. It didn’t focus on what sort of AI can be brought into the library, but rather about the different AI out there and how you can use it to help with marketing, program planning and finding answers. Different companies/organizations such as Blue Cross Blue Shield are invited to set up an information table to share their resources and literature/brochures. This builds our community partnerships and provides patrons with qualified tools and resources to improve their lives, supporting our initiative of learning and nurturing. Book handling /Concepts of print 2. Increasing sight word vocabulary 3. Reading strategies and behaviors 4. Phonic and phonemic awareness 5. Listening Comprehension 6. Reading Compression, fluency and automaticity 7. Writing (Not tested) BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2025 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2025 16 Chart 1 Results of Student Assessment A total of 26 students were tested, 9 were unavailable for testing. Please note that due to privacy concerns, students’ names were changed to pseudonyms. The month of January was dedicated to helping students master skills in reading comprehension, especially with reading to develop fluency and automaticity to help improve literal and interpreted comprehension skills. We decided to focus on these skills since students were engaged in testing at their schools. We felt students would benefit and be more successful in achieving at high levels if their fluency and automaticity were increased. An increase in fluency and automaticity usually enhance comprehension skills. To achieve our goal, we invested time with students to help them improve their sight word vocabulary acquisition. Data was collected using observation and running records to determine student progress in the aforementioned areas. Students were tested based on their area of need. Data from this will be used during the month of February to adjust instruction to address student ’s needs. BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2025 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2025 17 Practice Packets Tutoring /Homework help remained our focus. However, enrichment activities were also included to help motivate students and to provide brain breaks as needed. These enrichment activities still required students to use skills learned during their tutoring sessions. In addition to assisting students with their homework brought in from school, the practice/study guides have been invaluable. These instructional packets have activities that parents can do with their children and cover topics like, sight word recognition, letters/writing, phonics, and math. We have received very positive feedback from parents as they engage students at home to further hone their skills. Other As the aforementioned chart indicates, the majority of the students being served are at the grade K-5 level. We have seen an increase in the number of students with homework assignments centered around cursive and paragraph writing. We have observed that many of these students struggle with writing cohesive paragraphs to complete the required five paragraph essay. As a result, we have also increased our focus on developing paragraphs with main ideas and BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2025 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2025 18 supporting details as well as creating descriptive paragraphs. We continue to encourage students to use graphic organizers to help organize their thoughts and think in a cohesive manner. These activities are aimed at helping students enhance their skills in writing, communication, critical thinking, and creative writing. The graphic organizers help students to focus on the topic and the main ideas and identify supporting details to support their thinking. BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2025 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2025 19 January 2025 Monthly Adult ESOL Report AmeriCorps The start of the year began with the continuation of past tense verbs, using our hand-made flashcards to study and practice and talking about what we did the day before and for New Years Day. Then, we dived into auxiliary verbs (to have, to do) and not only differentiated past from present, but looked at affirmative and negative forms and introduced contractions for these (don’t, haven’t). This was a big lesson, and for my beginner ’s was a bit complicated and confusing for them at times, so I am so proud of my students for persevering and using our affirmations and encouragement from myself and others to keep going. My intermediate class and I had fun using “to have” in different forms to ask and answer questions. I printed out a bunch of questions, cut them out, and we all took turns asking and answering these questions (like “What do I have to do after class?” “What do I have to do to become rich?”) It was interesting to see our different answers and way of thinking. Even the common, “love or money ” debate came up! Next lesson was possessive adjectives for both of my classes and possessive pronouns only for my intermediate class. To engage my students in a fun way, I asked them about their favorites (movies, colors, food, etc.) and wrote them down on the white board to create a chart. Using this chart, my students then used possessive adjectives (her, his, your, etc.) to tell me what someone’s favorite is. We used this to talk about families too, and we discovered that a lot of my students have 6+ siblings! BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2025 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2025 20 Then for professions, I handed out vocabulary sheets for us to go over that has a photo of the person doing their profession, such as a doctor, and the corresponding name of that profession. To get my students more involved and thinking about these professions, I asked questions like, “What is your dream job?” and “What did you want to be when you were little? I was so impressed with their understanding of these questions that they most likely would not have understood in the beginning (more so for my beginners). There were answers from doctor to teacher to singer. A look ahead: continuing on this profession route in February, we will be talking about interviews for jobs and immigration. I will also be handing out sample forms and going over words from those forms, how to fill them out properly, and doing mock interviews together and then individually to get my students comfortable and confident. A few of my students left to pursue a job or studying, so I added more to fill in the space. It ’s amazing how welcoming my students are to each other, and there are already new friends! I also changed the names of my classes from Beginner 1 and 2 back to Beginner and Intermediate to provide fitted accuracy for those students that now remain.
