Library Board
Boynton Beach, Florida February 26, 2025

Ms. Pagan responded that it was not, that they compile the statistics as a requirement
for their State Aid Grants, and that they also receive funds from the City.

posed if there would be an increase in availability of popular items.
Ms. Pagan explained that the Library has Cloud Library and Libby, and patrons can

Archives' Monthly Report — February 2025
10
• Finished up all the fine details/research for the Brown Bag Lecture — final draft just about ready
for March!
• Currently accessioning/processing a lot of newly acquired materials for the archives. One mister
Chris Hamilton whose dad was with BBPD for many years donated tons of old photos of early
Boynton Police Department, lots of new materials donated from our Miss Gillian, and continuing
work on processing the Boynton Beach Star donation we received (we now have the full run of
all their publications, yay!). A handful more donations as well, quite a few to process are on the
backlog.
• Beginning work in the archives with our new help Mary Kate Leming — we have been discussing
and planning out directions to go with continued work on the library's oral history project(s).
Mary Kate has been great so far and brings a lot to the table. More to come soon on this!
• Off -again -on -again help at the research desk; always a pleasure! General reference assistance
etcetera there, not much else to report!
• General historical research for various city departments as -needed; helped Craig Clark dig up
primary sources relating to Mr. Cullen Pence/Pence Park/etc., Miss Kelly Armstead on assisting
with preservation best practices on older materials, and a handful of other un -notable Q&A's
• Assisting the Boynton Beach Chamber of Commerce with accessing historic documents of the
CoC throughout the years & outlining a records retention policy for potential future donations
from them (yay!)

• Assisted mister Graham Brunk S. (Manager of the Palm Beach County Library System) and a
handful of librarians from the system on an overview of our archives/preservation/general
approaches to archiving as many of them are looking into starting their own archives/history
rooms — wishing them the best luck! CN
• General housekeeping/foldering/boring data entry things which I am happy to drone on about if
you'd like!

The most popular class category this month is ProCreate and making lip balm.
February was a productive month for the Boynton Beach City Library Makerspace, with 7
appointments per week. Laser cutting, Cricut card making, and photo printing were the
most popular projects among users. We also welcomed two new volunteer sewing
instructors and a patron interested in leading a photography class. Looking ahead, we
are planning introductory programs on Cricut, sublimation, Inkscape, and 3D printing to
expand learning opportunities for our makers.

FEBRUARY AGENDA:
February 6th —Troubleshooting Common Issues with iOS Devices
February 13th — Smart TVs and Streaming Devices
February 20th — Internet Lingo 101
February 27th — What is Social Media?
Something interesting happened during the February 20th class. The people that attended had signed up
for the Smart TVs and Streaming Devices. The entire group took a poll and decided that they wanted to
go over the February 13th Tech Talk instead. I agreed, and they were all thrilled and happy that I was

14
able to adapt for that. As a compromise, I told them that I would hold an actual 90 -minute class about
Internet Lingo 101 later in the year.
14 One -on -One's:
met with one senior who was struggling to organize his Excel spreadsheet for his monthly finances. We
were also to put the information into a clear format and I was able to show him to update it regularly. I
was also able to share some of the literature that I use during my Excel classes for him. He left incredibly
happy and ready to take on the task of managing his finances using Excel.
I helped a regular patron on building up confidence to make purchases online. She has been struggling
with confidence on how to shop safely on Amazon.com and other online shopping sites. I was able to sit
with her and watch her make purchases through Amazon.com, just to reassure that what she was doing
was correct. We went over how to shop smart on Amazon and read reviews and check ratings before
purchasing.
Other Notes:
Tech Talk at the Senior Center has been picking up. I have a regular group that come and then a few of
them end up attending some of my classes at the library. I truly enjoy going there and Brenton has told
me that people are constantly asking when I will be back to the senior center. They are very flexible and I
tend to have some people just filter in and filter out, then I have a few that stay the entire time.
Q2 Schedule has been posted to LibCal and the flyers have been created.

Brown Bag Exchange is a new initiative that we started to give guests an
opportunity to learn more about the library's resources, register/renew library
cards and meet city staff members. Different companies/organizations such as
Florida Blue are invited to set up an information table to share their resources and
literature/brochures. This builds our community partnerships and provides
patrons with qualified tools and resources to improve their lives, supporting our
initiative of learning and nurturing.

A total of 26 students were tested, 9 were unavailable for testing.
Please note that due to privacy concerns, students' names were changed to pseudonym.
The month of January was dedicated to helping students master skills in
reading comprehension, especially with reading to develop fluency and
automaticity to help improve literal and interpreted comprehension skills. We
decided to focus on these skills since students were engaged in testing at their
schools. We felt students would benefit and be more successful in achieving at
high levels if their fluency and automaticity were increased. An increase in fluency
and automaticity usually enhance comprehension skills. To achieve our goal, we
invested time with students to help them improve their sight word vocabulary
acquisition.
Data was collected using observation and running records to determine
student progress in the aforementioned areas. Students were tested based on
their area of need. Data from this will be used during the month of February to
adjust instruction to address student's needs.

Practice Packets
Tutoring/Homework help remained our focus. However, enrichment activities
were also included to help motivate students and to provide brain breaks as
needed. These enrichment activities still required students to use skills learned
during their tutoring sessions.
In addition to assisting students with their homework brought in from school, the
practice/study guides have been invaluable. These instructional packets have
activities that parents can do with their children and cover topics like, sight word
recognition, letters/writing, phonics, and math. We have received very positive
feedback from parents as they engage students at home to further hone their
skills.
Other
As the aforementioned chart indicates, the majority of the students being served
are at the grade K-5 level. We have seen an increase in the number of students
with homework assignments centered around cursive and paragraph writing. We
have observed that many of these students struggling with writing cohesive
paragraphs to complete the required five paragraph essay. As a result, we have

also increased our focus on developing paragraphs with main ideas and
supporting details as well as creating descriptive paragraphs. We continue to
encourage students to use graphic organizers to help organize their thoughts and
think in a cohesive manner. These activities are aimed at helping students
enhance their skills in writing, communication, critical thinking, and creative
writing. The graphic organizers help students to focus on the topic and the main
ideas and identify supporting details to support their thinking.

didn't before.
We ended the month strong with an impromptu dance class. I opened up the classroom, moving
the tables and chairs so we had dancing room. We stretched, and they were taught common
American dance songs they may encounter at weddings or big parties, like the Electric Slide and
the Cha Cha Slide. Then, I opened it up to my students to put on music from their country and
show us how to dance to it. Exercise, fun and a lesson all in one!
We will continue practicing conversation with correct pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar in
March to help students improve further.

Progress: Students can talk about how they feel, but some still have trouble identifying
and pronouncing more complex emotions like "disgusted" or "suspicious."
4. Weather
Objective: Teach vocabulary related to the weather and talk about it.
Activities:
o We learned adjectives for weather like sunny, rainy, cloudy, and windy, nouns
(sun, clouds, etc.), and verbs like raining, snowing, storming.
o Students practiced talking about the weather and did weather report role-plays.
Progress: Students can describe the weather, but some need more practice with sentence
structure (e.g., "It's raining" vs. "It is raining").
5. Family
Objective: Teach vocabulary for family members and talk about them.
Activities:
o Students created family trees by writing the names of their family members in the
corresponding family member slot (aunt, dad, cousin, etc.).
o They practiced saying things like, "I have one brother" and "My father is a
teacher."
Progress: Every student can talk about their families, but they need more practice with
possessive forms like "my sister's name is..." (practicing saying the "s").
Progress and Challenges
• Progress: Students are more confident in speaking and have learned new vocabulary.
They can talk about their jobs, feelings, weather, and family.
• Challenges: Some students struggle with grammar (like verb tenses) and pronunciation.
More practice is needed in these areas.
