Rounded up the last bits and pieces of Miss Gillian's materials relating to her collection here—just to list a few of her donations:teaching certificates from the UK in dance, awards/trophies, A/V materials, and lots of manuscripts/correspondence. • Slogging through my backlog of materials to be added to collections, as well as creating new collections. Processing Mr. Chris Hamilton's materials from his dad William "Bill" Hamilton, and creating a new collection for the Boynton Beach PD, as we don't currently have one. Let me know if anyone has any stuff for that! Brewing up some ideas for outreach on this as well. • Inching closer to (FINALLY)switching up our display cases, mister Brian R. in the Creative Edge Studio has helped quite a bit printing out photos and other materials for this; currently going to swap out the two outer cases with the FD centennial and collaborating with miss T. Marshall on engaging our patrons with historic recipes from the archives. Lots of great recipes such as "bean loaf" and more mango recipes than you can count with two hands! • Continuing work with Mary Kate on the oral history project. Although she has limited time, she has been a boon for moving things forward.Still in the planning and outreach phase—current steps are training M.K. with our recording equipment and drafting up general questions/directions specific to each potential subject. • Nothing notable beyond the handful of reference requests both internally from the city, and externally from patrons &other potential users interested in archival materials. Typical requests consist of looking for X photos from Y years in the archives, however there are plenty more beyond that. One notable reference exchange was assisting a musician use our oral history recordings for their art project; cool (citations& references were added where appropriate)! • Presented my lecture for the Brown Bag early this month. It went as well as I could've hoped it to! Didn't have a panic attack, and patron feedback was amicable! Yay Currently kicking around ideas for future presentations with a lot of the materials& research available at my disposal. • Coverage for the research desk as-needed for Sonia and Donna, always happy to do more! • As always, lots of"boring"things like preening the website, combing through physical materials, adding materials to collections, preserving&foldering documents for our collections, and more menial tasks. Please do ask if more elaboration is needed and I'm happy to expound BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT— MARCH 2025 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT— MARCH 2025 10 Creative Edge Studio; Brian Reagh Programs: Hand-Crafted Greeting Cards (Saturday): 10 Hand-Crafted Greeting Cards (Evening): 10 Paper Quilling: 10 Adult Coloring Club: 4 Sewing Beginner Lesson: 6 Sewing Intermediate: 6 Appointments: With Librarian: 29 With Studio Assistant: 0 Creative Bug Active Users: 9 New Users: 2 Hours Watched: 4.39 The most popular class category this month is Sewing. BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT— MARCH 2025 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT - MARCH 2025 13 14 One-on-ones: This month, a lot of snow birds have been coming to the library and asking for assistance with digital organization of their files. I was able to show them how to upload their files to their cloud storage and how to recall those files. I also showed them how they can scan a lot of their papers straight from the camera on their phone. One patron came for help creating a contact list on Excel so she could plan a family reunion (she had over 150 relatives to add to this Excel spreadsheet). It turns out that she did not have Excel, but she did have gmail, so I showed her Google Sheets and how it is exactly like Excel. We were able to create a clear contact list and then she was shown how to share it with her other relatives so they could contribute to the spreadsheet on their own. Other Notes: March at the senior center went very well. I had six people and we went over how to use the camera app on their phones and how to edit images. We also talked about scammers and how to stay safe from predatory scams and phone calls. Getting linked in with Linkedln had zero attendees—which made me a little sad. I worked very hard on that presentation and I even updated my own profile to show them. I think I will try this class again later in the year. BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT- MARCH 2025 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT — MARCH 2025 18 Spring Break Due to Spring Break (Mar.25- Mar. 29) and because many parents communicated that they would be traveling with their children, testing was not administered. We opened up tutoring for the week of Spring Break and parents were encouraged to bring their children in. We plan to resume testing for the month of April, and will continue to assist students in any way we can. Practice Packets Tutoring/Homework help remained open during the Spring Break. Parents were encouraged to bring their children, and 30 min-1 hour sessions were made available. In addition to assisting students with their homework brought in from school, we have also started giving out practice/study guides. These instructional packets have activities that parents can do with their children and cover topics like, sight word recognition, letters/writing, phonics, and math. These activities are aimed at helping students enhance their skills in reading, communication, critical thinking, and creative writing. The writing portion of the practice packets include a simple to follow formula for creating main ideas, placement of supporting details, and paragraph writing. BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT- MARCH 2025 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT — MARCH 2025 19 Other On Thursday March 27th, we held a Guest Reader event in our room from 3:30pm-4:30pm. In collaboration with Ms. Devynn, we had both her beginner level and intermediate level adult ESOL students volunteer to read to our K-5 group. The turnout of adult volunteers was spectacular and our K-5 students got the opportunity to have 10 different books read to them in languages like Spanish, Creole, Ukrainian and Arabic. We transformed our classroom into an enchanted readers space that featured things like a craft activities table, readers tent, readers puppet station, and pick your own reading buddy (stuffed animal) basket. As a big thank you for their tremendous support and incredible effort, Reading Achievement Certificates were awarded to every adult reader along with a book themed reusable tote. This activity really helped to highlight the importance of increased and continuous engagement with students when it comes to literacy, reading strategies, behaviors, comprehension, communication and fluency. By making this an interactive and inviting event, students were ecstatic to engage with our guest readers and participate in all activities presented to them. Guest readers were able to interact with students by having them sing/count along, asking questions, making real life connections between characters and modeling fluent and expressive reading skills. The exposure to the diverse readers and their reading abilities gave our K-5 students different perspectives on stories, while also giving them exposure to a wider range of voices and accents in which those stories were read-in. Student/Parent feedback was very positive, and both Ms. Aldith and I feel BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT- MARCH 2025 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT — MARCH 2025 20 that this event helped to reinforce reading and literacy as a positive, enjoyable and rewarding activity. Our goal is for our students to be confident and secure in their reading skills, and develop a lifelong love of reading. General Observations: • Participation: Students have shown increased participation during group activities and discussions, especially on topics like music and health, where personal experiences could be shared. • Challenges: Some students required additional support with medical vocabulary and health-related expressions.Extra practice through role-playing and listening exercises helped to address these challenges. • Progress:Overall, students have made significant strides in speaking and comprehension, particularly in the areas of body parts and health. Their ability to describe physical sensations and engage in everyday conversations about well-being has notably improved. Next Steps: • Continue reinforcing vocabulary and expressions from the music, body, and health topics through review exercises and role-play activities. • Focus on listening comprehension by incorporating more varied audio materials(e.g., podcasts, interviews)to develop a wider range of listening skills. • Do more reading and writing exercises. Plans for April In April,we will focus on: 1. The home/furniture 2. Animals Conclusion: In March, three new students were added to my intermediate class: one from Venezuela, one from Morocco and one from Turkey. BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT— MARCH 2025 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT - MARCH 2025 28 In addition to the lessons outlined above, a few of my students and I attended the first Friday event to dive deeper into our music lesson and get practice outside of the classroom (see attached photo). My students and I had conversation about the instruments they noticed and if they liked or disliked the music. We then had a St. Patrick's Day celebration in class, where everyone was encouraged to wear green and did. I taught them about the holiday, how it's celebrated here and in Ireland, and the origin of the holiday. Pilar had a marvelous idea to host a reading event, where my students read to her students. With great and meticulous planning,we lined up ten of my students to read to hers. We did our best to keep the stories short and engaged the students with other languages and cultures. Some of my students read popular and familiar children's books like"Goodnight Moon"and"The Three Little Pigs" in English and Spanish. The kids were also introduced to Arabic and a Ukrainian folktale(see attached photos). The children repeated words to learn them. The event was praised by all students. This also helped my students get comfortable speaking English in front of others and helped them with their pronunciation. We practiced and read together before the event a few times. My students received reading certificates, a ribbon and a book tote for eagerly participating. Yay! Working on making adjustments/changes as requested (larger signage, etc.) • Continuing collaboration with Mary Kate on getting the oral histories moving. Reaching out to various community members on both of our sides & creating question outlines. Working on creating a flyer to distribute for M.K., however, she only has about 1 day a week so this is moving slowly (on her side at least) - additionally trained her in using our recording equipment for conducting interviews. • General website maintenance (correcting bad information, STILL finding broken links/images from the great migration) • Research/reference: a few handfuls of various patrons & city employees with various research/reference questions for the archives; dug up the 1920's architectural firm's (King & Campbell) contract for the construction of BB High School, researched for a journalist one Morris Baskin (he was some sort of serial killer) as to if he was a part of the Boynton Beach City Commission back in the 70's (he wasn't! phwew!), information on Boynton's older Black community members from our oral histories for the Children's Museum, and plenty more reference/research tasks to name a few. • Sitting at the hot-seat over at the research desk as needed! • General preservation actions of newer accruals (acid-free foldering, re-housing into archival boxes); some to be added to existing collections, some will most likely have a new collection &finding aid created • Missed almost a whole week from the flu this month, and had another week off for scheduled vacation, so I missed a bit of work this month unfortunately, plenty of time to catch up though i BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY PAGE 10 CREATIVE EDGE STUDIO Submitted by: Brian Reagh , , Programs: j': • Hand-Crafted Greeting Cards (Saturday): 10 , ;«, ; t ry: `;,,;; .may rrba ,C.. ._.a .. 1 ' :. • Hand-Crafted Greeting Cards (Evening): 10 a_ • - • Cardboard Loom: 7 )a. . • Adult Coloring Club: 5 - • Sewing Beginner Lesson: 6 I 1 A • Sewing Intermediate: 6 - ; r, .. ;--i Appointments: 4't With Librarian: 23 % 14 With Studio Assistant: 2 (Sewing) Amir* .7 " r Creative Bug Active Users: 6 " ; Nial New Users: 1 Hours Watched: .5 The most popular class category this month was the "Collage Homage" In April, the Creative Edge Studio supported several exciting initiatives. This class will be a brief 60-minute chat along with instructions on how to use different technologies. Registration is required and limited to five seats. Others may drop-in but the five registrants will be given seats. This class will be held in the pop-up area of the library. APRIL AGENDA: • April 3rd - What is 5G? • April 10th - Using WhatsApp? • April 17th - Exploring YouTube • April 24th - Facebook Safety Settings Tech Talk has a steady group of people that attend. Their favorite topics seem to be about the safety settings on devices and the Al that is within their devices. My favorite thing is when they leave saying "I wasn't anticipating learning anything." Or "I always leave this class learning something new." I have been getting that lot, and a lot of the people that attend are also the ones that meet up at the senior center. BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY PAGE 12 PUBLIC TECHNOLOGY TRAINING PROGRAMS Submitted by: Brianna Tabil 7 One-on-Ones: While the numbers for 1:1 session have dropped, this month, I was able to meet with completely new people. I think having the registration on the website instead of in person gives some patrons confidence to ask for help since they don't have to come into the library or call me for an appointment. The registration form also gives me a chance to make sure I have the right materials for them and it means they come in with a specific task in mind, not just opened for whatever they might think off the top of their heads. One patron came in with device safety questions. We went our session going over steps she can take to protect herself and what to do if one of her devices is stolen. helped to reassure her that even if someone stole her phone, there are steps she can take to make sure that her information on her phone is protected. Other Notes: Wednesday, March 30th, the library was invited to participate with the Sponsor Appreciation Brunch. It was held from 9am - 12pm. There were many sponsors there - Humana, Conviva, The Club and a few other local companies from around Boynton Beach (there was a heart doctor, an Esthetician, an PT company). The seniors had Chick Fil-A sponsor their breakfast and then a chef from The Club came by to make smoothies for the seniors. While I was there, I was able to meet with a lot of the seniors who did not know the library was offering tech support. I was able to schedule four 1:1 appointments while I was there. I handed out all my pens within the first hour. Our quarterly pamphlets were gone by the time I left around 11am. Despite the last minute invitation from the Senior Center, I am glad I was able to go there and represent the library and inform some of the seniors that don't normally come to the center while I am there. Please note that due to privacy concerns, students' names were changed to pseudonym. The month of April was dedicated to helping students master skills in reading comprehension, especially with reads to developing fluency and automaticity to help improve literal and interpreted comprehension skills. chart 2 Number of Students who were tested by Grade Level Grade K 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 #Enrolled 2 2 4 6 2 7 2 1 • Reading/Writing Many of our K-5 students are coming in with homework assignments centered around figurative language, cursive, and paragraph writing. Many students are struggling with the writing portion of their homework, as well as text interpretation. Because of this, we have increased our focus on helping students understand the meaning of what they've read. During our tutoring sessions topics like making inferences, drawing conclusions, using text evidence, and understanding author's message/purpose are being taught and practiced. Continuing to help students with text interpretation and figurative language, will allow them to develop a range of comprehension skills that help them understand and engage with a variety of texts. Students being able to analyze and comprehend reading material is crucial in other subject areas like math and science as well. Repeated practice will also expand vocabulary, foster creativity, and help students interpret text efficiently. Ultimately, we want students to not only feel comfortable when they take exams or complete homework assignments but also to look forward to growing their literacy skills. Practice Packets The writing focused practice/study guide packets that were created so that students could keep themselves refreshed on information, has been updated with new activities. These activities are aimed at helping students enhance their skills in reading, communication, critical thinking, and creative writing. We encourage parents to use these packets for additional practice on weekends or no school days. e Alphabet =:17"1:*. a.. SG Cc B d £ 31 •= TR >/ 72,. 0. Topic: The Home (Rooms & Furniture) Objective: Students will be able to identify rooms in a house, describe furniture, and use appropriate vocabulary to talk about their homes. Content Covered: • Vocabulary related to rooms in the house (e.g., kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom, hallway). • Descriptive language for furniture and household items (e.g., sofa, table, chair, bed, fridge). • Phrases for discussing the layout and location of rooms (e.g., "The living room is next to the kitchen"). • Prepositions of place (e.g., next to, behind, in front of). Progress: - Students demonstrated strong ability to identify and name rooms in a house. - Many students can now describe their homes using basic vocabulary. • The group practiced dialogues describing their homes and performed a "show and tell" activity, where they described their own living spaces and used their own phones to do so. Areas of Improvement: • Further practice is needed with complex prepositions and full sentence construction. • More focus on pronunciation and fluency in conversations related to describing a house and furniture. 2. Topic: Daily Routines Qjective: Students will be able to describe their daily activities, understand and use time-related vocabulary, and talk about routines in the present simple tense. Content Covered: • Vocabulary for daily activities (e.g., wake up, eat breakfast, go to work, study, exercise). • Time expressions (e.g., in the morning, in the evening). • The present simple tense for regular actions and routines (e.g., "I wake up at 7 a.m."). • Phrases to express frequency (e.g., always, usually, sometimes, never). • The present past tense for tasks or routines accomplished before class. BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY PAGE 19 AMERICORPS MONTHLY ESOL REPORT Submitted by: Devynn Fletcher Progress: - Students are increasingly confident in discussing their daily routines. • Most learners can form simple sentences in the present simple tense. • The use of time expressions and frequency adverbs is becoming more natural. • Interactive exercises, such as "My daily schedule" and partner dialogues, were well received and allowed students to practice speaking in context. Areas of Improvement: • A few students need more practice with word order in present simple sentences (e.g., "I always wake up early" vs. "Always I wake up early"). • Reinforcement of adverbs of frequency, especially in questions and negative sentences (e.g., "Do you always wake up early?" vs. "I don't always wake up early"). 3. Topic: Animals Objective: Students will be able to identify common animals, describe their characteristics, and use vocabulary related to pets and wildlife. Content Covered: • Vocabulary for common animals (e.g., dog, cat, bird, elephant, tiger). • Describing animals using adjectives (e.g., big, small, friendly, fast, dangerous). • Discussion about wildlife and habitats. Progress: • Students successfully identified a range of animals and their characteristics. • They demonstrated an understanding of descriptive adjectives and used them to describe animals effectively. • Some students expressed interest in discussing animals from their countries or regions, leading to cultural exchanges in class. Areas of Improvement: • Students could benefit from additional practice with animal-related adverbs and nouns (e.g. "furry," "scaly," "hooves," "fins," etc.). BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY PAGE 20 AMERICORPS MONTHLY ESOL REPORT Submitted by: Devynn Fletcher 4. Overall Performance: Throughout the month, students have shown steady progress in all areas. They are becoming more confident in using new vocabulary and forming basic sentences in the present simple tense. However, some students require more practice with sentence structure, particularly in constructing negative sentences and questions and word order. 5. Next Steps: • Continue with practice on prepositions and descriptive Language for both home and animal topics during warm-up conversations. • Begin introducing more complex routines and time expressions, such as "on weekdays," "in the morning," and discussing the past tense for activities. Instructor's Comments: I am pleased with the progress that the students have made this month. They are eager to learn, and their participation in class activities has been enthusiastic. Continued practice with real-life contexts and conversation will further boost their confidence and fluency in English.
