01-27-26 MinutesMINUTES OF THE EDUCATION AND YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD MEETING HELD ON JANUARY 27, 2026, AT 6:00 P.M. AT BOYNTON BEACH CITY HALL 100 E. OCEAN AVENUE, BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA PRESENT: Lori Wilkinson, Chair Sandra Watson, Vice Chair Myah Sagrans Kristopher Kenny, Alternate Ariella Tenenboim, Student Paul Jean (Arrived 6:03 P.M.) ABSENT: Julie Carter Paul Standord I. Call to Order Chair Wilkinson called the meeting to order at 6:02 P.M. II. Pledge of Allegiance Sherri Claude, Board Liaison The members recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag followed by a moment of silence for our Country. (Paul Jean arrived.) III. Roll Call taken. Roll Call was taken. A quorum was present. IV. Approval of Agenda Motion Mr. Kenny moved to approve the Agenda. Vice Chair Watson seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. V. Approval of Minutes Motion Vice Chair Watson moved to accept the minutes. Mr. Kenny seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Meeting Minutes Education and Youth Advisory Board Boynton Beach, Florida January 27, 2026 VI. Announcements/informational Items Sherri Claude, Board Liaison, announced the Annual Daddy Daughter Dance to be held on February 7t", from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Woman's Club. She advised registration for the dance and other events are online. Ms. Claude also announced that she is retiring at the end of February. The members congratulated her. VII. Public Audience None. VIII. New Business A. Barrier Free 5K Chair Wilkinson announced the above event and explained that the event is a 5K Run/Walk/Roll at Congress Avenue Barrier Free Park which is a park that has special play equipment to allow individuals of all abilities to use the park. She advised that the race would be early on Saturday February 7t" and it is an official race and about 200 people participate. She noted the event will have an honorary starter, who will have a specialized child's wheelchair, known as a magic wheelchair concept. She explained the history of how the event came to be. She announced this year that Wolf Carpentry is the main designer for the wheelchair, but they don't know the concept and she praised Stephanie Soplop, City ADA Coordinator, as serving as the liaison for the event. Chair Wilkinson said individuals wanting to participate can sign up online and receive a tee shirt. This year the Magic Wheels and Special Deals and Magic Wheelchair unveiling is Thursday February 5t" at the Ezell Hester Cener. The special deals part is they have company vendors there that are run by disabled persons or that employ individuals with special needs. Those participating in the Barrier Free 5K can pick up their race packets and t -shirts at this event. Chair Wilkinson welcomed new Member Ariella (Ari) Tenenboim to the Board. Ari, who is a Senior at Boynton Beach High School, provided an introduction and is excited to serve on the Board. The other members briefly introduced themselves. . B. Bob Borovy Award Chair Wilkinson provided the history of the award and clarified that it is a monetary award for the recipient to use as they see fit. She provided information on who the board was named after. She explained the number of entries varies by year and the award is given away at the end of the school year. Entries are judged on volunteer service, letters of recommendation and an essay. In the past, the number of awards given away each year was contingent on the amount of money in the account and the number of entries. The award information is sent to the schools and guidance counselors. The deadline this year is March 31St. She advised the application is on the website and they already have one applicant. Ari will help to publicize the opportunity as well. IX. Old Business A. Youth Symposium Chair Wilkinson stated the Board had previously discussed a youth symposium and they spoke with Frank Ireland, Recreation Supervisor, about it as his department holds one. She advised that they were looking for assistance, such as a sponsorship, or providing food, or water, and to also hold a break-out group to learn about the various departments and the duties they handle. She said that they could come to Commission Chambers and they could show them how a meeting is run. She asked for ideas and noted the event is planned for April 3t", a Friday, so there is no school that day. Vice Chair Watson said the event starts in the morning, they break for lunch and then return to the Carolyn Sims Center. Chair Wilkinson asked what the members would like to do. She said as another option, the members could also speak about what they do. Vice Chair Watson said she liked the idea of showing youth how a Board meeting is run. Ms. Tenenboim suggested showing the youth all parts of the process. The members liked the idea. Chair Wilkinson suggested creating a mock public audience and then hold a mock Board meeting. She will contact Mr. Ireland and find out what time of day their presentation would be and she requested Ms. Claude find out if Chambers would be available on the 3rd, and if this presentation would require official public meeting notice. She said she would also ask about refreshments. B. Fundraising and Outreach. Chair Wilkinson stated they spoke about this a bit regarding the Borovy Award. She said they need to be cognizant that there is only $3,800 in the account, especially if the Board gives $1,000 award at a time. She said a good portion of the funds in the account comes from the Harvey Oyer family who may be willing to donate again and another portion of the monies came from an organization that was closing down that had to disburse their funds. She said that if people do not donate, they have to raise the funds themselves, so members should look for opportunities. She noted prior fundraisers were working at Annual Holiday Parades and other events selling chips and water. She pointed out that they can also ask someone running for office ahead of time for funds from their campaign, because when the campaign is over, they 3 Meeting Minutes Education and Youth Advisory Board Boynton Beach, Florida January 27, 2026 have to disburse their money. Chair Wilkinson said that they used to have a connection with SunFest, which is no longer held, and connections with Arti Gras, but that event is about a month from now, and it may be too late. Vice Chair Watson noted the following upcoming events are First Friday events, a Highwaymen art exhibit, and a Say it Loud event at the Arts and Culture Center. She also mentioned that the Girl Scouts Service Unit will be selling cookies for First Friday. She suggested contacting Amanda Onda, Division Director Events, to see if they could sell water. Chair Wilkinson said that it was important to make sure no one else is selling water and that other organizations raise funds at certain restaurants that give a portion of the bill back to the organization but a lot of people are needed for it to be successful. X. Next Meeting: Tuesday, February 24, 2026 Chair Wilkinson announced the next meeting. XI. Adjournment Motion Mr. Kenny moved to approve. Ms. Tenenboim seconded the motion.
