The library board meeting was used as the first public input meeting for the
Boynton Beach City Library expansion project. Library designer, Sam Ferreri,
presented the initial plans and discussed his rationale for the layout. Board
members and the public were given an opportunity to ask questions and give input
to the designer concerning the plans. The general consensus was that the plan is
excellent and seems to reflect both the specifications required to conform to the
state grant as well as local issues such as staffing for security, separation of age
groups, technology space utilization, and sufficient group meeting areas. The next
public input meeting will be held June 14th at 2:00p.m. The exterior design may be
presented at that meeting as well as revised interior layouts.
The final portion of the meeting was devoted to discussion of the necessity to
promote this library expansion project as a necessity to the city commission. The
commission is expected to decide very soon whether to fund the project with
proceeds of the Public Utility tax, or to use a referendum to get further public input
on the willingness to raise taxes to pay for the project. The consensus of the library
board is that the library expansion project should be considered an "important need"
for the citizens of Boynton and that the Public Utilities tax should be used to fund
the project. Board members agreed to speak at the June 3rd commission meeting to
make sure commissioners understand the board's position on this issue.
The next meeting has been scheduled for Saturday, Jun 14th at 1:00 p.m.
