A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA,
ENCOURAGING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE AND
THE PALM BEACH COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD TO
APPROPRIATE FUNDING FOR THE
CONSTRUCTION OF A HIGH SCHOOL IN
BOYNTON BEACH; AUTHORIZING AND
DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO FORWARD A
COPY OF SAID RESOLUTION TO THE
APPROPRIATE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF
REPRESENTATIVES AND SENATE AND TO THE
PALM BEACH COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD; AND
PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, it has been a continuing desire of the community of the City
of Boynton Beach to have a high school constructed within the city limits to
service the educational needs of community youth, as there are no public high
schools within the city; and
WHEREAS, a high school located in the City of Boynton Beach will
contribute in a positive fashion to the education of children and to the general
welfare of the City of Boynton Beach, Palm Beach County, and the State of
Florida;
WHEREAS, the Palm Beach County School Board has recognized the
need for a high school to be located within the city limits of the City of Boynton
Beach, but due to economics and lack of funding for the project, has been
unable to meet this goal; and
WHEREAS, it is recognized that, at the present time and for some time
into the foreseeable future, it is likely that there will be inadequate resources and
funding at the county-wide evel to embark on such a construction project; and
WHEREAS, the tremendous growth of school-aged children within the
City of Boynton Beach and its surrounding areas has created a great necessity
for a high school to be constructed within the city limits; and
WHEREAS, the State of Florida has recently settled the lawsuit against
tobacco companies, and is anticipating substantial revenues therefrom; and
WHEREAS, the State of Florida has indicated that a portion of those
settlement dollars should be allocated for educational purposes, and that
education, ~n general, should benefit from the settlement; and
WHEREAS, unless state aid and appropriations, through the tobacco
litigation settlement or otherwise, are provided to this community for the
construction of a high school, the youth and the other residents of City of
Boynton Beach will be adversely affected.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA, THAT:
Section 1. The City Commission of the City of Boynton Beach, Florida
does hereby strongly encourage the legislature of the State of Florida to enact
necessary legislation and allocate sufficient funding for the purpose of
constructing a high school within the City of Boynton Beach.
Section 2. The City Commission hereby directs the City Clerk to
forward copies of this Resolution to the appropriate members of the State of
Florida House of Representatives and Senate, and to members of the Palm
Beach County School Board.
Section 3 This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon
passage.
